On Christmas Day, I went stargazing after a hearty afternoon get-together with a few friends.
Braving festive crowds in town wasn’t exactly my cup of tea but I was prompted by a mysterious nudge to capture some captivating Christmas sights for a time capsule.
Yes, everything seemed utterly commercialized and there was no doubt that retailers were laughing their way to the bank. The meaning of Christmas could have been lost in the sea of revelry. But guess who I found?
It is still Christmas season. The Twelve Days Of Christmas is a delightful carol but one that did not make much sense to me beyond the superficial until recently. I am surprised to find that there are hidden messages in the carol – each gift on the list is a secret reference to a christian parallel.
The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ.
The 2 turtledoves are the Old and New Testaments.
The 3 French hens stand for faith, hope and love.
The 4 calling birds are the 4 Gospels.
The 5 gold rings refer to the Torah (1st 5 five books of the Old Testament).
The 6 geese a-laying stand for the 6 days of creation (Genesis 1:1-31).
The 7 swans a-swimming represent the sevenfold gifts of the Spirit (Romans 12:6-8).
The 8 maids a-milking are the 8 Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12).
The 9 ladies dancing are the 9 fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
The 10 lords a-leaping are the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17).
The 11 pipers piping stand for the 11 faithful disciples.
The 12 drummers drumming symbolise the 12 points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed.
A historical background can be found here.
Isn’t that creative?
